Lake Kivu featured in TIME World’s 100 Greatest Places

American news magazine and news website TIME has dubbed Lake Kivu as one of the world’s 100 greatest places in their latest annual roster by featuring it on the illustrative world map cover by London-based mapmaker Katherine Baxter.

Stating that Rwanda has an “impressive array of unique, eco-friendly and luxurious tourism”, the solar-powered floating hotel in Lake Kivu is featured amongst a number of other famous attractions, including the Edvard Munch Museum in Oslo, the world’s longest pedestrian bridge in Arouca, Portugal and the cultural campus of Qaumajuq in Winnipeg.

It is no surprise that TIME chose to feature this Rwandan landmark. Lake Kivu is known for its stunning clear waters and impressive rain forests and is situated on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. Because the lake is located so near the equator, the weather is pleasant and accessible year-round. It is the largest lake in Rwanda and the sixth largest lake in Africa.
