Trade between companies in developing countries and producers in developing countries in which fair prices are paid to the producers.
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for producers. It’s about supporting the development of thriving producer communities that have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work. Fairtrade was created as an alternative way of doing trade. It is based on partnership, which means that the interests of producers are just as important as other commercial considerations. It also represent one solution to poverty and a model for development. Choosing fairtrade products means helping producers around the world get a better deal.
World Fair Trade Organisation’s mission statement:
“WFTO’s mission is to enable producers to improve their livelihoods and communities through Fair Trade. WFTO is the global network and advocate for Fair Trade, ensuring producer voices are heard. The interest of producers, especially small farmers and artisans, is the main focus in all the policies, governance, structures and decision making within the WFTO.”
Beauty of Rwanda is happy to support fairtrade by not only offering a fair wage but also recognising that there is a much greater need in creating alternative strategies like capacity building, literacy and other visible tools that will empower the weavers. Beauty of Rwanda continues to work directly with the weavers in their community in rural Rwanda and has done so since the beginning. There is no middle importer or hidden source.
Beauty of Rwanda recognises the importance of fair trade because with fairtrade, you have the power to change the world.
